55 Rural Women Farmers Undergoes Training on Women's Human and Legal Right

WiLDAF Ghana, as part of the Rural Women’s Empowerment Project has trained 50 rural women in the Ga West Municipalities and the Dangme East Districts on issues mainly based on women’s legal and human rights.

The 50 women comprised 25 women each of the Dangme East District and the Ga West Municipality. These women are members of the Farmers Organisation Network in Ghana (FONG), an implementing partner. The women were trained in their respective districts. Thus two main workshops were organised to this respect. Also present at the workshop was the Head of Wildaf’s Regional Office in Togo Mrs Kafui Adjamago - Johnson, 6 district assembly members (3 from each sector) one police official from Amasaman, two social workers and two FONG executives.

The Ga West Municipal area’s training was organised at Festus Hotel at Pokuoase from the 7th to the 12th of June 2009, and that of the Dangme East District was held at the Garden’s Club Hotel at Ada from the 22nd to the 26th of June 2009. The rural women during the workshop were trained on the following issues
  • Gender Issues
  • Human Rights
  • Domestic Violence
  • Family Laws (Marriage, divorce, inheritance, child’s right and administration of Estate)
  • Women and Land Issues
  • Advocacy and lobbying
  • Community Mobilisation Skills and Communication
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution (Mediation)
  • The role of Legal Literacy Volunteers
  • Women in Decision Making in the Community
Participants during the training also undertook a field visit to a nearby community to educate them on issues with respect to marriage rites, inheritance and on child’s right. This activity took the form of a role play. After the sketch, community members intend asked many question on what they gathered from the role play. These questions were all answered adequately by the legal officer present. The women trained are now considered Legal Literacy Volunteers of WiLDAF (LLV’S).
