The overarching objective of the African Women Decade is to mobilise and accelerate the achievement of previously established international, regional and sub-regional declarations, protocols and conventions (CEDAW, BPfA, MDGs, SDGEA, GEWE to name a few), with emphasis on "grassroots" approaches. It is from these previous commitments that 10 pervasive themes were carefully selected. Each year of the coming decade will focus on one of the following themes:
- Fighting poverty and promoting economic empowerment of women and entrepreneurship
- Agriculture and food security
- Health and maternal mortality
- Education, science and technology
- Environment and climate change
- Peace and security and violence against women
- Governance and legal protection
- Finance and gender budgets
- Women in decision making positions
- Young women movement
In order to ensure the success of this initiative, the African Fund for Women, launched in 2009, will mobilise various established grassroots capacity building projects. WiLDAF Ghana along with its regional partner in Togo is among the projects selected.
