Her bravery, resilience, sense of judgement and initiative are striking. These are the qualities responsible for her efforts at foiling a smuggling plot while raising serious concerns about the conduct and vigilance of the security personnel on duty on the 20thof August 2011. As the head of the District Security Council (DISEC), she executed her administrative responsibilities with distinction.

Madam Alijata Sulemana's action vindicates the discourse and advocacy efforts of Women's Rights Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and other groups for increased women's participation and representation in politics. It also proves that women's participation in the local governance system would result in development in communities and ultimately the larger society because they are agents of change.

It further reiterates Section G of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action which states categorically that "the empowerment and autonomy of women and the improvement of women's social, economic and political status is essential for the achievement of both transparent and accountable government and administration and sustainable development in all areas of life".

This singular act of bravery by a woman has no doubt saved the Nation huge sums of money and raised legitimate concerns about some of the nation's security personnel. If the concerns raised are pursued in the spirit of nation building, it would put people on their toes in the discharge of their responsibilities and encourage other upcoming leaders, particularly women.

It is hoped that Madam Alijata Suleman's example will encourage more women in leadership positions generally, either by appointment or election, to work assiduously to contribute to the development of their communities, districts and the nation. The media must also be commended while being encouraged to create more room for discussions that highlight the good work being done by female leaders.
