GTZ Supports WiLDAF to Host a Two Day Pre-Legislation Seminar On Property Rights of Spouses Bill With Stakeholders
The Bill offers adequate redress by providing a general standard to determine property rights of spouses generally, by taking into consideration the different marriage types and customs of our society. It is also in response to various international instruments and documents which speak to equality and non-discrimination of men and women.
Additionally, it is gender neutral and seeks to regulate the property rights of spouses during marriage and on its dissolution. The Bill does not regulate property rights of spouses at death; that is provided for by the Intestate Succession Law, 1986 (PNDC Law 111). When passed into law, the Bill will provide uniformity of application across the different types of recognized marriages in Ghana.
It is for this reason that Women In LAW and Development in Africa with Support of German Development Corporation (GTZ) on the 28th and 29th September, 2010 at the Osu Presby Hall held a two day conference for some media personnel’s and some selected women group on the Bill.
The seminars aimed at creating awareness on the Bill and collating views of these stakeholders to Parliament. These seminars were one of the two organized with other stakeholders including Traditional Authorities and Artistes. Participants of these two days seminars were drew from media, security services, religious sects, CSO’S, Individuals.
Participants expressed interests and concerns of the seminars being a success and urged WiLDAF to hold more of such seminars to make a lot more people sensitized on the pre – legislation process.
